trigger warnings required,
trigger warning: self injury, discussion of posting SI pictures/pictures of SI scars,

Kxx (Mod): no offense to anyone, but i think this is stupid.
We cant block pics like this or have rules against them, per se….. Yes if someone wanted to post a video of them hacking away at their arm or committing murder..we would have to delete that.
But delete a picture displaying scars?
Why?

Emery: If one doesn’t know what it’s like to be a self-harmer then this request would seem stupid. But you have to look at it from others’ point of view: seeing pictures of other self-harmer’s scars can be very triggering. And for those who would like to avoid being triggered by such images it’s unfair to those of us who are trying to stop. Like if you were trying to quit smoking, would you like someone posting pictures of other people smoking? It’s a real addiction whether you like it or not and it should be recognized as one. There’s also the jealousy & competitive part of the addiction; seeing someone’s scars you can’t help but compare theirs to your own and wonder who’s are better.

(Quoted) A trigger is an event that pushes a person over the edge and leads them to seek immediate relief through self-harm. A trigger can be an external event, such as an argument, or an internal event, like remembering a traumatic time.

Or pictures. Especially pictures.

I know what you’re saying about pictures of non self-inflicted injuries and I wouldn’t take down pictures like that either. The difference between self-inflicted injuries and non self-inflicted ones are pretty clear. And they’re especially clear to self harmers. I’d also imagine that the person who posted the photo would add that something happened to them or that the scar in the picture was from surgery.

The photo that Mxxxx, one of your mods, posted was a picture of her arm with the words, “You don’t want this” above it. That, to me, is a pretty clear unwarranted advertisement of self harm.

This isn’t a black-and-white issue, either. There are such things as compromises.

Thanks for discussing it, too.

Jesus Christ, why is this even being put into question? Even though this forum is run by 18-19 year olds, I feel way older than I am. I’m not saying that I’m more mature (well, actually…) or more intelligent than the others, I just think that everything I had to explain to Kxx was common sense. Then again, I saw that when that picture was posted, she mentioned that she “only had two [scars].” Now, I’m neither proud nor ashamed of the fact that I’m a self harmer, I’ve just accepted that it’s something that I do. I think it’s safe to say that after around two and a half years of doing it, I know what I’m talking about and that I’m not wrong. Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if half of the people who came from EB started cutting because of that site and because they thought that it was a very “emo” thing to do. I know that that isn’t true for me because I started for a different reason; god, I was a stupid child.

So I think I handled it pretty well. I didn’t get angry, I was calm and thought about my reply. Oh, I think I’ll just go pat myself on the back now. ;) I think I should include Kxx’s whole response, just for fun. :)

What if someone posted a picture in the camhappy thread and they had gotten hit with a baseball the day before and had a cut or bruise on their cheek? Could we say “no sorry, thats gory or shows harm and we have to delete it”?
Say someone had a surgery as a kid and has multiple scars…would we have to delete any pictures that show a hint of it?

Yeah i know this is kinda different…but its like i said..it not as if a video of the action was posted. Its scars. Anyone could have gotten them anywhere.

Offensive material can not always be blocked…. Think about it
If a christian member came on the board and posted about god everywhere, I would be offended. At the same time, they would be offended at my distaste for religion.
Would both members be unable to post their opinions?

What if someone completely obsessed with justin bieber came on the forum and took offense to the justin bieber thread and asked we remove it? Could we do that?

Offensive material will be everywhere…. Thats just my point

As a mod, its my job to make sure members are happy and not offended and i am going to do my best to do that, but we cant delete EVERY post that might get on someones wrong side.

I think thats my entire opinion but im on my phone at work so i forget half of what i typed xD >.>,

Opinion made, i will tell you that us mods are in discussion on what to do to make everyone happy.
